I came across this interesting new technology at ISPO in Munich yesterday.

Tripstix make inflatable boards, with the inflatable parts being longitudinal tubes. The tubes have varying diameters, so the thickness and shape of the boards can be controlled much better then with a dropstitch board, which has the same thickness side to side and back to front. The tubes are not as stiff as dropstitch of course, but this is taking care of with the second valve. In between the tubes there is another air chamber filled with a granulate, and when the air is pumped out of that chamber, the granulate stiffens and acts as a large number of stringers.

A very interesting and refreshing idea, and they won the Brand New ISPO award with it.

Below are some images and the official text from the Tripstix flyer.

Hardly any other surf-discipline has developed so quickly over the past years like SUPs. Whether flatwater, whitewater or bigwaves – Stand Up Paddle Boards are represented in a variety of playgrounds. Inflatable SUPs (iSUPs) are preferred by beginners and families, whereas intermediate and pro-level surfers demand a higher level of performance. The latter is realized by building hardboards from composite materials, e.g. fiberglass and carbon. The Munich startup brand TRIPSTIX has achieved to combine the advantages of both concepts, iSUPs and hardboards. Tripstix won with their new VacuuAir technology the ISPO BRANDNEW AWARD 2016 in the category Hardware Summer. The completely newly developed Two- Chamber-Construction offers three main advantages:

TRIPSTIX Boards:
- feature a high level of performance due to their stiffness and shape, rivaling those of classic surfboards made out of composite materials,
- provide more safety than traditional iSUPs thanks to a second floatable chamber,
- and, at the same time, are as comfortable to transport and store as a classic iSUP but inflate twice as fast

This was achieved with the innovative and patent pending Two-Chamber-Technology, consisting of air and vacuum chambers. The air chambers give the surfboard its shape while the granule filled vacuum chambers provide stiffness and stability to the board when a vacuum is applied. The vacuum tubes replace the stringer in classic surfboards. The technology can be used for any shape imaginable. Having built over 10 prototypes in 4 different shapes, Stefan Klare and his team are close to marketability. Market entry is expected for spring 2016.

Traveling to beautiful coastal areas for short business trips and watching other people surf rather than hitting the water himself, Stefan Klare realized that it was about time to create an iSUP that is not only transportable but also delivers exceptional performance. The idea to incorporate vacuum chambers into inflatable surfboards for unprecedented stiffness was born when opening vacuum packaged coffee.

ISPO BRANDNEW is the world’s largest start-up competition in the sporting goods industry. The awards are focused on innovative products and the brands behind them. Since 15 years, the best applicants are selected by an international jury of experts each year. This year 372 competitors from 38 countries entered the race and Tripstix won the ISPO BRANDNEW AWARD 2016 in the category hardware summer.

Hope these are as good as they sound! This tech would put inflatables on par with hardboards.
