The Hydra is designed to be a good quality, NZ-made, entry-level PFD at a reasonable price which meets the new standard NZ5823:2005. Whilst it is entry-level it is by no means basic, square and uncomfortable like some others.
The Hydra comes in 2 colours, firstly Auckland Harbour Yellow, which should satisfy any picky Harbourmaster. For those not wanting to be a canary we have Red. Both have ample and approved reflective tape so they are also legal to wear at night.
Buoyancy has been arranged as per the rules so it will turn the wearer and float them on their back. We have used the same soft foam that we use in our other PFDs so it is comfortable to wear for extended periods. It has one large front mesh pocket with key clip.
The side piece has been made like a pocket: this is so extra foam can be added, which is particularly useful for polo where side foam is required.
