I'll be at Surf Expo in Orlando next week. If there is anything in particular you would like me to take photos of, collect info about, or anything else I should do there, please let me know. It's going to be hectic, but I'll see what I can do :)

Or if you would like to set up a quick meeting for a coffee or so, please send me a PM.

Cheers,
Jeroen

I'lll be there too Jeroen, maybe see you there.

Try and get over to the demo day on Thursday Sept 5 th youll be able to demo dozens of boards and take photos too. Sometimes in the convention center they frown upon picture taking

Above were some random photos from the demo day. Not quite random: they have in common that we hadn't published any photos of those products yet during Outdoor Retailer last month.

Also curious about the Rawson boards. They look interesting and when I was a kid you really arrived when you had a Rawson gun in your quiver.

Plus that Exocet Marlin looks fun in rough ocean stuff.

Another awesome Surf Expo in the books. Its amazing to watch this sport Blow Up, and these trade shows make it really apparent. Even more new board mfgs as well as waterski and powerboat mfg's have their own boards now too, Connelly and Jobe just to name a few. Lots of new inflatables and paddles to be seen and at this point there is no end in sight pf who and where it will go and how big? I seriously think it could be as big an industry as bicycles. Interestingly there were also certain big mfgs absent. Surftech and Quickblade were clearly not in attendance for some reason? It will be interesting to see who shows up at the January Surf Expo show? From my intel Naish and Starboard are not planning on going. Overall the booths were buzzing on Fri and Sat, but Sun seemed way slow. Just some of my overall observations.

I didn't see anything "new" unless you are meaning brands. Lots of new brands with nothing to them but flashy paint and a catchy name. The SUP industry is on a fast track to a crash with the influx of garbage being sold to ignorant buyers. I was laughing at the moronic sales pitches coming from these jokers. Bottom line is if there isn't a shaper behind the brand it's crap. People need to understand that just because a brand pays pros to ride there line doesn't mean that they are actually riding production boards. Naish is the only brand that I know of that makes their riders use production boards. Most educated riders understand that Conner wins on SIC boards but the general public has no clue and that's where I see the problem.

Conner rides SIC boards in the interisland races, but in more typical races he's often riding boards which are close to, or the inspiration for, the following year's Starboards - insofar as I can tell by looking at his boards in person and comparing to what SB sells the next year.

I do believe that SB are having another go at producing their own open ocean boards though, so even the SIC part may change...

Starboard is the master of photoshop. Insperation or not if the put a pic in their catalog of a pro rippin' next to a picture of the model they are trying to sell is disingenuous

there was a little scuffle in the starboard booth with a dealer that was slighted, would like to hear more on that.
Pearson's laird boards looked pretty bitchin' if we are talking about shape, not a fan of the construction but I am not a fan of straight fib o' glass layups
Those focus boards in carbon look ok but I have seen the rails blow out from a paddle strike, carbon is too fragile to be used the way they do unless you don't mind repairs or replacing.
Boga price point crap with nice paint
Naish is solid
Starboard well let's see what they put on the next issue of stand up journal, could it be that one of their riders will be surfing killer waves on another brand again?
As for most of the rest the just figured out how to call china and get the " lucky best good time fun board" made, all the same no real design just cookie cutter shapes from cobra and dragonfly

Jammer, while this may come across as a bit of a shot it truly is not meant that way. Which companies do you like? Your post eliminates a huge number of SUP Companies if we include everyone that uses China and Cobra. I generally would try to support those companies that aren't focused solely on maximizing their revenue. Love to hear who the good guys are.

Just saying that their pros are typically racing on boards very similar to what they sell in the showroom.

About the advertising, I'd go even further and (paraphrasing BIll) say that all advertising is inherently disingenuous. It's all trying to say: If you buy our product, then you can do this. And that is always a lie. Whether I'm on an 9x30 whale or a 7'4x24 performance board, I can't do "that". Photoshopping the boards is sloppy, but no more disingenuous than the other advertising - not in my estimation at least.

I'm not going to promote any brand, there is plenty of that on this and other message boards. I am going to call a turd a turdwhen I see one.
If the thing you most love about a board is the color of graphics then nothing I say is going to matter to you. Not being a arse but performance has nothing to do with the 8th grade carnival graphics.
You can't spell prostitute without pro. When they aren't getting paid its interesting what they ride.

To your credit, you did say Naish was solid. Still I'd like to hear more of what you did like, if only to balance out all the criticism.

If Boga is "price point crap," is there a mid-priced brand/board you do approve of?

If you don't approve of Focus' carbon SUPs durability, are their brands doing all-carbons that you do think hold their chops? Or, are you simply not a fan of carbon boards...

Just curious, mate. It'd be good to get a little more info around your call-outs.

Jimmy Lewis, naish, SIC. I've seen some customs that looked pretty wicked

I don't believe in sacrificing quality to get prices down.

Carbon is ridiculously fragile FACT and feels wonkie when used for surf boards OPINION

I feel I am actually not calling any companies out, just there marketing

I 100% agree with you on the Marketing.

I'm OK with a mid-price brand that is HONEST about their quality and where they've sacrificed to create affordability. I'm not OK with the rest, who make crappy boards and market them as "on par" or better than the premium quality brands that you've mentioned.
