Yes, i own the one that you linked to from REI, the Astral. In fact I just got out of it. I use it in a kayak, and it is killer. Very low profile, great for paddling and fishing.

Keep in mind, I think it is significantly less flotation than a lot of other vests in the event of great need.  But I love it.

I have a Astral V8 (vest in above link) and although a high quality vest it sits up a bit high on me. I got the med/lrg and am 6'3" and 230 lbs. It isn't bad and it works but do not think I would like it for paddle boarding. I found a patagonia vest that fits amazingly well and use it for kayaking and cooler weather SUP. Most comfortable vest I have had. I wear a onyx belt back similar to the hobie belt pack and it is way comfortable for the hot days. Forget it is there but it is if you need it. On another note, I have got a Hobie Kayak vest and it just plain uncomfortable and is so for whoever has tried it on to loan it to.

Thank you everyone for the variety of advice. I popped by my local EMS this weekend and tried a few that they had, and I chose the Astral V8.  I've not yet had the chance to try it in the action, but in theory, it seemed to have almost everything I was looking - lightweight, minimalistic (it's practically three styrofoam blocks held together with sparse webbing and a couple of strap), and it's loaded with vents.  Will only be able to give it a try once my board gets here in about a week or so.

Cheers.

I just bought a pair of Cabela's Guardian™ Series Essential 2500 Manual Belt Pack PFDs . They list for $80 each. Cabelas is having a $20 off sale on anything over $150. Free shipping to a store (which is across the street from my office). Plus I had $46 in points accumulated. So $104 out the door.

We sup on very cold mountain lakes, and recently bought wakeboard style impact vests in case we needed to float for a bit. They are not an approved PFD in canada, but they float us just fine. I am 6'2" and weigh 200lbs, and  i am a sinker. Also, they are neoprene pull over style with a half zip on one side. Nice big open arm holes that don't rub. Very cool, stay wet for a bit which is nice when the sun is hot. I have one from Ronix, and my gf has one from Oneill.

Well, the Astral V8 life vest works like a bloody charm!  After going from rather choppy waters where I was kneeling and paddling, I entered the harbor area where the waters are generally calmer, tried to stand up, and the wake of a passing boat behind me caught me off-guard, I lost my balance, and plunged right in.  Like a complete douche, right in front of two guys standing by the rocks fishing away.

After freaking out for a second, I caught the board, pulled myself up and heaved myself on-board again.  The Aquapac I was using to carry my iPhone worked like charm, kept the phone dry during this brief dunk.

But all in all, I've been quite happy with this life vest over the past two weekends.   It's light, it's pretty airy, it doesn't get in the way at all.  The only downside?  The bright royal blue color.  Puketastic.

Nice to hear that it worked out for you. I went to REI to look for the Astral V8 but was not able to find it. I ended up ordering the Kokatat Orbit Tour pfd based on other recommendations that I have read. Hopefully it works fine because I am not a strong swimmer (I sink like a stone). My pfd should arrive tomorrow so we shall see!

Supsports is right, go for the Hobie all he way.  It's designed for SUP.  Light and small.
