Crazy few days of traveling but finally made it to Tahiti! Spent 26 hours flying and traveling to get from Thailand to Maui. What an awesome trip in Bend, Oregon over the last week having the opportunity to meet with High Lakes Elementary, Ponderosa Elementary School, Bend Senior High School, Skjersaa's, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Groove Yoga, Mt. While traveling abroad to another competition where I’ll proudly be representing my ʻohana and Hawaiʻi, I missed an important day at home where Hawaiians statewide came together #Laulima to show honor and respect for Queen Liliʻuokalani and the Kingdom Of Hawaiʻi. 125 year ago on January 17th, 1893, The Hawaiian kingdom and monarchy was illegally overthrown. At that time our queen Liliʻuokalani was held at gunpoint and was threatened by a corrupt group who said they would start war with the Hawaiian people and kill her ‘ohana. Seeing and reading all the aloha and kaumaha poured into posts yesterday made me feel like I was there in spirit. A lot of the posts were insightful, many sad with the feeling of grief, and as well many other posts captured what looked like a joyous celebration remembering and honoring the prosperous Hawaiian kingdom and ways of life. Did you know that Martin Luther King visited Hawai’i? On his visit he must have been influenced and embraced by the Aloha spirit. 1 year later during the 54-mile march from Selma to Montgomery on March 21, 1965, Martin Luther King and others took pride in wearing Hawaiian lei. During this civil rights movement the lei, in which symbolizes aloha spirit, love, compassion and togetherness, was appropriate, however even more cool that these lei where made in Hawaii and sent to Alabama for this movement and rally. In Hawaii some may believe that When someone makes you a lei, they’ve put a part of themselves in it. #OceanWarriorCourse link in my bio- There’s been a lot of injuries lately within our community of surfers here in Hawai’i- this should be a wake up call for all of us ocean goers, entry level to professional, to be aware of the dangers and best prepare ourselves not just to be confident in our own abilities but also to be confident in the opportunity to help and/or save someone’s life. Growing up in Hawaii we learn from a young age the basics- “if in doubt don’t go out”, “always use the buddy system”, “never face you’re back to the ocean”, “always go with the rip and never against it”, just to share a few.
