This elegantly crafted sea kayak is designed by Larry Gray to provide a fast, responsive kayak for paddlers of all skill levels.
Its high bow slices cleanly through rough seas while its low profile in the water provides excellent stability and control in a wide variety of sea conditions. The distance between the cockpits allow for effective control when in wild windy conditions. The rear paddler can easily reach the main vantage points of the kayak for over all control. The front paddler is positioned to allow maximum control of the bow . The double is famous for its stability in rough conditions and the ability to roll up if capsized. Uncompromised strength in construction provides long term durability and confidence in extreme conditions. Innovative deck and cockpit configuration provides comfort and functionality for the paddlers on extended journeys.
Further Specs:
Length (with rudder): 660 cm
Detailed Information on Hardware:
Rudder System:
Although very manoeuvrable in its rudderless configuration, an effective retractable style rudder, that does not restrict beach or rock landings, is available to assist in extended touring conditions. The rudder system attaches to the kayak via a sacrificial fitting that ensures that the integrity of the deck or hull is not compromised in the event of a severe impact upon the system. Like all aspects of the Pittarak, the rudder system is constructed from marine grade materials that are easily repairable in the field. Control lines are constructed from Spectra for long term durability and smoothness of operation. Individual tracks are used for the easily adjustable pedal system to ensure that leg movement is not restricted within the cockpit. The complete system can easily be removed from the craft if the paddler wishes to advance to rudderless techniques.
Hatch System:
Highest grade VCP hatches used throughout to ensure sealing integrity of the three storage areas. Hatch properties are stable over a broad temperature range to provide secure, readily accessible compartments in a variety of climates. Forward and day hatches provide an I.D. of 185mm and the rear oval hatch provides an opening of 410mm x 225mm. Retaining leashes are fitted to all hatches to prevent loss.
Storage Compartments:
All storage compartments are isolated via sandwich constructed bulkheads that are pressure tested to ensure water integrity and then fitted with venting ports to provide pressure equalisation between the compartments. Both the day hatch and the rear compartment are accessible from the cockpit. The rear hatch has an incorporated water foil to prevent impact from heavy seas. The unique split day hatch enhances access to dry storage while providing a defined area for wet storage items. Storage volumes are: forward @ 60 litres, day @ 24 litres and rear @ 95 litres.
Cockpits:
Expedition level contoured cockpit to enhance control over the kayak in rough conditions by providing superior knee, thigh, hip and back braces. Rounded combing provides additional sealing surfaces for the paddlers spray deck. Smaller cockpit also provides optimum strength. Length @ 580mm, width @ 365mm.
Bilge System:
High volume hand operated bilge system that is flush mounted into the deck to enable left or right handed operation. Totally reliable and accessible for both the paddler or rescuer in or out of the kayak in any rescue situation. Fitted with non return valves on both the inlet and outlet.
Deck Fittings:
Deck line and carry handle guides are fully moulded sections of the deck to prevent leakage into the storage compartments. All 6mm deck lines are provided with low profile terminations and are flush mounted into the deck. Sturdy carry handles are positioned to prevent ‘finger jam’ when dragging the kayak fully laden.
