Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling news in week 52, 2016.
Canoe Kayak Cruising the Big Missouri River
Canoe Kayak - Join the six percent club! Canoe the last free flowing wild stretch of the Big Muddy. Civilization has mercifully bypassed and spared 160 miles of this wilderness waterway on its sinuous course across Montana. As I floated down the remaining un fettered “six percent” of the mighty Missouri past mild rapids, gravel and mud bars, and massive sandstone cliffs. the sheer desolation of the badlands caused me to marvel at the gumption of the first explorers.
Canoe Kayak Darin McQuoid
Canoe Kayak - When I found kayaking it was the perfect way to explore river canyons, says Darin McQuoid who grew up “in the sticks exploring canyons on foot.
NRS Duct Tape Diaries After monsoons Wilson River in Northern Oregon becomes a great river to raft
NRS Duct Tape Diaries - When storm brings rains then Wilson River begins to swell. Waves form on it over the mid-stream boulders and it becomes a great river for rafting. For the past three years I have haphazardly tried to raft the Wilson River, but it’s tricky. It’s not the access nor the rapids that are too difficult, it’s the flow that’s temperamental. It only runs after a few days of heavy rain. Too much and it turns into continuous Class III-IV—beyond my league.
Team Pyranha Whitewater run at the rapids of Meghalaya
Team Pyranha - It’s been an absolutely awesome season out here in Meghalaya. A few of us headed out in July, a month or two before the conventional season kicked off, to see what gems were hiding in the monsoon months.During the rainiest part of this year’s relatively weak monsoon we headed to the Jantia Hills, home to Meghalaya’s steep bedrock creeking. We paddled some great new sections and found a lot of massive rapids and drops that needed a bit more water and the next generation of chargers to come and throw themselves off.
Jackson Kayak How they organised and made popular a White Water Fest in Russia.
Jackson Kayak - Okulovka Kayak Contest, whitewater kayking fest in Russia. Here you can read how the Organzers made the Fest popular in Russia where kayaking is a young sport. It had good line of events and activities for novices and experienced kayakers and there were cash prizes too for complex events like kayak cross and freestyle. The festival ran from Friday to Sunday.
Jackson Kayak Exploring the Karnali River - Nepal
Jackson Kayak - early Wednesday morning we anxiously packed the rickety and colourful bus with our waterproof bills bags and somehow managed to stack 21 kayaks questionably high on the roof. Knowing that the Karnali wasn’t necessarily about the whitewater it had, the group was looking forward to a change of pace and the intense beauty and remoteness of the river and its surrounding jungle valley had, , the group was looking forward to a change of pace and the intense beauty and remoteness of the river and its surrounding jungle valley had.
Ben Hawthorne Had rapids to have some white water fun in Canada
Ben Hawthorne - I got myself set up, got into some working and pretty soon i got into some kayaking as well. I actually did alot of kayaking this last summer, but as evidenced by the photos here it was mostly after work, evening runs. The upside of this is that the Sqamton area, and the sea to sky corridor is home to some of the best whitewater on the planet. I admit, i completely lost count of how many upper Cheakamus, Callaghan or Balls to the Wall laps i got in…
Tony Paradise Top 10 paddles of 2016 - #9
Tony Paradise - Nine days left in the year and today its my 9th favourite paddle of 2016 from Colliers to Cupids on April 17th. This is a shorter version of the original posts with a few shots not previously pulished. We met in Colliers and did a car shuttle up to Cupids before we put in at almost 11:00. Colliers can be a long carry to the water when its low tide because its very shallow near the beach. The paddle north of Colliers along the cliffs doesn't offer a lot of scenic shore until Turks Gut at Marysvale were we had lunch an hour and a half later.
Traversing Make most of Free entry to Canada’s National Parks through Discovery Pass
Traversing - To celebrate Canada’s 150th, Parks Canada gave everyone a pretty cool gift. Simply head over to their website to order a free ‘Discovery Pass’ which will let you enter any of their 46 national parks, 171 national historic sites, four marine conservation areas, one national urban park and eight historic canals. It seems everyone we chat with has heard about the Discovery Pass, however there are two important things that many people keep getting wrong about the free pass…
unsponsored Chasing Niagara - A real life white water action film to watch
unsponsored - I have just finished watching the full version of Chasing Niagara (just over 1 hrs worth of action). It has been available for a while via iTunes at a cost. However it is currently available to watch for free on Red Bull TV. Huge waterfalls, near death experiences all captured in such a way that makes Chasing Niagara appealing to both paddlers and non-paddlers.
Tony Paradise Top 10 paddles of 2016 - #5
Tony Paradise - I checked ship's log for last winter. We paddled mostly in St. Philips throughout the winter but one winter paddle that stood out was one we did in Cape Broyle on March 13th. My list would not be complete with at least one winter paddle and so this memorable one is my number 5. We arrived at our usual put-in and found it frozen so we moved around to the south side where we managed to get the kayaks on the water. We got on the water alright but there was plenty of ice to navigate through.
Austin Kayak Hobie Pro Staffer’s Take On Safety
Austin Kayak - Once upon a time on the Texas Gulf Coast back in early 2004, a shark fishing buddy introduced me to sit-on-top kayaks, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Over the years of fishing and continuously learning about the multitude of applications, rigging options and techniques, I identified a pattern of something extremely important that was missing from the majority of seminars and demos – that’s what I would like to talk about in this article:
Frogma Probable Last Paddle of 2016
Frogma - I'm on the tail end of a cold and it would've been tempting to take another day to be a lazy git, but I floated the idea of a paddle with TQ and he was up for it, and it was a lovely day out there. Nothing dramatic, just out around Ruffle Bar and back, but it did feel good to get out there and get moving. There's always that point in a cold where you could stay home another day, but you know it would probably be better to get off yer duff and go do something.
Andraz Krpic Idrija – A Hidden Run in Western Slovenia
Andraz Krpic - Rainy November days in Slovenia. Most people seem to not enjoy this time of the year too much. Us kayakers are a bit special. For me, the best part of realizing that I was going to spend this fall back home was the expectation of this wet weather.
Hala Before The Freeze
Hala - Instead of doing all the shopping madness I utilized my Black Friday to #optoutside. Plus I am an REI employee so I had to take full advantage of a paid day off to explore :) I went to St. Croix State Park to hike and paddle.
