hey beasho and pono....and anyone else who knows?
« on: October 06, 2018, 12:33:23 AM »
ive been riding a SimSUP lookin L41 type 8'6" with the maliko 200 for 6months now and i think im ready to move on to something higher performancey....i.e.....i can do 3 for 1's but the  tail slaps when pumping back out  and rails drag in the cutbacks...you guys both started on L41's and are big guys like me 230#...

going to Maui next week and i saw a 7'6" starboard hypernut on craigslist 106L i think....

do you think this a good idea?....or should i just go get an easyfoiler or ask dave kalama?...

cant decide...thanks :D

Steamroller, I've seen your video, you're way ahead of me, so I don't have anything to suggest from experience. I worked a bit on downwinding in the Columbia this summer, but haven't ridden a foil in the surf since I left Maui in early May.

However, the question of what to do seems pretty easy. It seems to me the two most progressive people building foilboards are Dave Kalama and Jimmy (Marlon) Lewis. By progressive, I mean building new stuff every day, getting lots of feedback, and building boards for the people at the leading edge of the leading edge of foiling, not just for people starting out or at the intermediate level.

My choice would be talk to Dave, he's easy to find because if there's a wave he's foiling it. It might be a bit too slow to get the latest, latest from him, but there's a lot of turnover in boards from the folks that are trying to progress as fast as they can. "Used" in that sense means a couple of months old. You won't find those boards on Craigslist--they're generally one foiler to another.

Likewise Jimmy, the stuff he and Marlon are building for the serious folks is just amazing. You might be able to get something sooner from Jimmy. You'll be in Maui, you know where to go--straight to his shop up on Giggle Hill.

Last but not least, don't go too long or wide. Get something at the edge of what you can handle. I thought Mr. Fugly at 7'2"X32 (I think--shitty memory) was really pushing things for me, but it's not. It's as stable as a dock.  7'6" is too long. I'd be looking at something in the 6'8" X 30 or 31" area

The IWA wing is probably the most important upgrade to start with.  The difference to the Maliko 200 is dramatic - much much better in turns and on the wave.

For your board, maybe consider a custom foilsurfmachine from dwight - http://supsurfmachines.com/  These are really well made and the shape seems ahead of a lot of the other boards out there besides the Kalamas and Lewis boards.

Steamroller--I have nothing to add to your quest for a different board but have to send out props... I was surfing Hurricane Maria swell at Pitas a week ago and saw you ripping the inside rock garden at Mondos in red shorts on your foil!  My buddy Frank told me who you were--crazy how your skills have progressed since your first post about foiling!

I agree with PonoBill's sentiments.

Add to that my great experience with the 6' 6" Easy Foiler.  I have no complaints.  I weigh 185 and the board is 115 liters.  Took about 10 sessions to get comfortable in chop with the straps.

As I have gotten better I would want maybe a 5' 6" but ONLY in smaller cleaner conditions.  Today I was out in 8 to 10 foot soupy, big, choppy intimidating stuff - 100% alone as usual when things get 'Dentonian'

The shorter noses can often get stuffed on bigger take offs, they just pearl right in.

My 8'4" simsup with a boat load of adhesive inserts and multiple track boxes weighs in at 21 pounds.  Any new board would probably be a huge improvement and weigh considerably less then what you have now.

I paddle a 7'3" foil board and while it's noticeably easier to fly it's also noticeably harder to catch waves.  If I lived in socal I would have a sub 7 foot foil board, but in norcal at most spots I much prefer a longer board.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Totally against the advice and Judgment of everybody here and on the beach that I talk to  I went ahead and pulled the trigger...on something scary small.... Kaser found a board from Junya here on Maui....its 7'2" x 26.5" x something crazy thin.....my first reaction was ...oh no...i dont think so...thats a fat guy shortboard or a kid sup....i get on that ill push it straight to the bottom... I don't know how many liters it is but when I stand on it in flat water it's about an inch under water at all times... The really weird thing is it is super sSTABLE.... like a rock..... I think I could probably even go narrower if I wanted to....its that stable.... doesn't move..... I can't tip it over even if I wanted to.... once you get over the initial shock of your feet being underwater all the time it's not a problem at all... I'm telling you guys Dave Kalama knows how to build them and build them RIGHT!!!!.... i tried it out in  choppy chunky windy blowing out crossed up backwashy warbly swell with no problem at all...punches through whitewater neck high ...stable..... And then once you get up on the foil Airborne ....man this thing Hauls buttocks..... I can't tell you how well it catches waves because I haven't let a wave catch me yet... I actually PUMPED INTO every single wave the past 2 days...its ridiculous how good this thing is.... I pumped into every single wave... Yeah I said it again because it was that cool to do for the first time....and then again the next 100...l if you're looking for a new board and you're ready to take the next step don't mess around with anything else just go straight to the source....Kalama ....man this thing is fun... Oh yeah I guess Pono did advise me on that... Good job Pono... Thanks!

That must be a pretty recent Junya board, I've never seen it before. Like I said, those things trade hands without any advertising--surfer to surfer. You have to be there to get one.

This is a classic "Ask the question and answer it yourself."

Also - Very Good News.  It sounds like the newest configuration is working.  Hopefully this trickles its way through to the other designers CAD systems and we all benefit.

Nice board steamroller. Whats on the tail, looks like 2 plugs with bungee cords?

Here's a nice photo which  looks like the same board.
