Guess I just don't consider myself that interesting, and that what I do is for my own enjoyment, and that no one else really gives a shit about it as a whole other than myself. But that's obviously just me...YMMV:)

So, there I am bumming a bit that I’m all out of my filming loop. Gear is scattered about and the last vid I made was almost a year ago...
but little did I know, some of you guys don’t even dig them.

The reason that I post is to share the stoke. The camera is pointed away from me, I’m not the story, the surf is.

Not everyone here has access to the sea or can even surf.  I’ve always had that group mainly in mind when I post. And any surfers who enjoy the stoke is a plus. Tip, don’t watch on your phone.

And actually I do pull out my vids and watch. After a life of surfing, individual sessions disappear into one long ride. A few moments are burned into the memory but most are forgotten.
When I’m watching, I’m back there, for a moment.
I took out the unimportant part of my quoted post, and bolded the two sentences that sum the whole thing up...

We're all different wrt likes, dislikes, interests, and personalities...and just because I don't like, care, or enjoy something, doesn't mean I expect anyone else to feel the same..."But that's obviously just me".

And just because I don't find what I do that interesting to anyone else; I do enjoy seeing yours, and others videos and pics...and hope you all keep posting them.  :)
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

. . . . Tip, don’t watch on your phone.
And actually I do pull out my vids and watch.

1) Yes SurfinJ - Please continue to share the stoke.

2) Surf is cheap, people are not.  I prefer when there is some context in the video.  This is why I like to shoot using the paddle cam rather than chest cam.  Get me or at least a human in the action.

3) I have been shooting video of windsurfing, special events and now surfing for 30 years.  What I found is that the video eventually becomes the memory.  Crack open some old footage and you / your friends will say "Oh yeah I remember that!"  But they only remember it BECAUSE YOU MADE A VIDEO OUT OF IT AND SHOWED IT TO THEM MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE PAST.

4) My preference is to keep the videos short ~ 3 minutes or one song length.  And mix up the footage.  Multiple sessions across multiple days with more people.  10 minutes of the same scene over and over gets to be a bit much.

5) Regarding the phone - I have given up  :'(.  I tricked out all my gear to shoot at 4K.  Stunning high-resolution footage.  Yet everyone watches on their phone and eliminates the need for 4K source.  I have learned, largely from SUPTheCreek to shoot at 1080P wide frame on the Session 5.

When I would invest the time in "Gold Standard" video it would take 3+ hours per minute of video.  I was doing this well before Youtube.  Below was one of the first paddle cam perspectives of SUP on the planet.  Certainly the first in waves well overhead.  With 10,000 views between Youtube and Vimeo I would like to think this spread the Stoke and got more than 1 person (my buddy Jim) inspired to start SUP'ing in the waves.

Where would we all be without Laird?  More importantly where would we all be without Laird and the video proof of how much bad-ass fun he was having.

"Thank the Laird and his film crew!"

“Thank the Laird”.  This is the vid that motivated me to get a camera and start recording, thanks for the kickstart Beasho.

And SanoSup, peace brother, thanks as well.

Although I don’t expect the real rippers and chargers on the zone to enjoy what I post as their POV is levels higher, for myself and the rest I will continue.

I think another issue to think about with gopro equipment is how fast your fancy new camera becomes obsolete, not only because of the newer models, but because of editing software they support needs to be upgraded with new computer OS updates.  When you buy a new phone if your phone is linked to the camera you have to update everything.  People spend more time editing than they do surfing.  I prefer to keep it simple.   A lot of folks who post here are on the right side of the bell curve with financial wealth, quivers with boards that are multiple thousands of  dollars each, now adding foils and automated camera systems to follow them in the surf to capture them riding ankle slappers from the beach and Gopros with stabilization so they can hook the thing on their paddle and give a signwave rendition of the ankle slapper rides.  Meh.  See you on the water....

So I finally upgraded from my old Hero 2, to a Hero 5. Good thing I waited. I paid $249.99 +tax for the camera and $19.99 + tax for an extra battery at Best Buy. They were having a promotion, giving a $25 gift card along with it. I picked up some extra mounting brackets for free:)
The Sessions 4 & 5 are now discontinued. Too many battery failure problems, and no way to change out the battery. Once the battery dies they are done. I think Creek's died as well.

BTW, My 7 year old Hero 2 is still working fine. I told the sales guy that and he said that most of the original Hero 2's still work because they were made by a different manufacturer back then. The new ones don't last as long.

I didn't hear that about the Session, that sucks, but I'm not surprised, mine gets really hot when charging sometimes. Oh well, let's see how long it lasts.

i much appreciate the pics and vids people post, as well as the stoke-share intent--i just find first person gopro unpleasant to watch, generally---i will put up with it if very curious re the surfer the wave the break etc, but dont enjoy the perspective--shots from some distance, like a cliff, or the beach, or from adrone, are simply much better, in my opinion, for any and all purposes

and i love photography too---but i hate fussing when there are good waves and the wind is right, and i usually have to rush to work or a family event immediately after surfing, so time is somewhat precious--hate tinkering, worrying that my sesh will be cut short or the wind'll go wrong--

thus my feeble attempt at getting my ss3 to work--gave it to a video editor proner friend to see what he can do--he's been frustrated too---gotta be dogged and willing to invest tiiiiime--shoot, creek's finally got it working--after what? 6 months? and his camera capabilities and patience blow mine away easily

my mavic pro drone risks gathering dust someday, but for now i love flying it almost as much as i do shooting pics and vids with it---remarked to my wife that, of all the useless toy $$ i have wasted in my long life, the mavic has been solid value--i simply have lots of fun with it and it does exactly what it's supposed to do with little fuss

I have to say... I use my GoPro probably more than any of my other cameras. I have some descent 'L' glass too, but that heavy stuff gets left behind these days. I made a trucker hat mount like Creeks for my Hero 5, and it works great. Switch between a floating handle mount, my chest mount and now the hat POV. Maybe twice I've done the 'At Me' FCS board mount. Not my favorite POV. I want to shoot friends and family. I love how I just let it run, and capture great stills out of the videos. I actually shoot video now with the intent of just getting stills out of it. A lot of what my family does is on and around the water, so the GoPro is perfect for that.

Yup, GoPro's have so many uses!
I am always stoked to see people vids

I was given my GoPro's by Zoners, because they liked my board reviews and figured video would help.
And it does  :)

When people see video of a board from all sides plus seeing it in action, they can take what they see and adjust it to their situation.
The GoPro gives a real baseline of info to work with..... and puts perspective to the words.

A wearable camera films a lot of cool stuff as nothing else can.

It's a fun little tool and I do not have to have the latest and greatest..... the Sessions5 meets all my needs, when a wearable camera is needed.

Nice shots, Creek. You are def the man wit da cam! Charging my two oldies now for manana. Hero4 Silver and the Session5. I like the Hero4 Silver for the lcd screen and the Sesh for it's small form factor. I do need a Creek Kook hat mount though, badly.
GoPros are the best cams. I actually have the original film GoPro from the early 2000s.

Rocked the Session5 today for the first time in a month. Thing held strong for the entire "Session". Supposedly it has an improved sensor for sharper images. They look pretty good to me!

Clicking on an image here will direct you to my flickr album of the entire session.

I want to admit that I joined the crowd taking GoPro more than anything else. Even I have a fancy SLR and dozen lens for it, I don't remember when I took it out last time. I own GP not for long, but it already provides a lot of amazing moments shared with friends and family.

And sometimes you could use it, where a normal camera would not go without extra effort (time, money, etc..)   I attached gP Session to the kite ($10 on Amazon) and spooled as high as the spool let me :)

Those two dots are me and my kiddo (screen grab from the vide we shoot).

think I'm gonna just keep on keeping on without one.
Every surfer should own one. They are very useful cameras. Paddle mount can yield some really good pov compared to nose mount. and there's also a hundred other things you can use them for besides surfing. It's a "Go out and have fun w/it" thing. I really like Night and Video Time-lapse modes.
Yeah, just not that kind of person who needs, (or wants) to document everything I do.

I'm sure it would end up just like my drone...used twice when I got it well over a year ago, and is now just collecting dust.  And since I'm in the water for fun, I personally don't care how I look doing it...so POV no matter where it's mounted really doesn't matter to me.

I'm also not one who thinks that everyone or anyone else really needs, nor cares to see what it is that I'm out doing at anytime. Nothing personal, and all of your posted pics and vids are nice, but why? Do you really pull them out, and look at them all by yourself often, or do you think others really want, should, or need to see them?

Guess I just don't consider myself that interesting, and that what I do is for my own enjoyment, and that no one else really gives a shit about it as a whole other than myself. But that's obviously just me...YMMV.  :)

What kind of drone do you have????

Alright, having now been inspired by so many of the accomplished video journalists here, I'm now reconsidering my thoughts on getting, and using a GoPro to share just a little more of the action going on out in the water (even if I don't video myself... ;) :D).

So, what's everyone's thoughts/opinions on a GoPro setup for a complete videographer neophyte who doesn't necessarily want go "all in" right off the bat just in case it doesn't go too well? Now when talking about a "setup", I'm talking not only camera, but the best/safest ways to attach it to self when foiling, so as not to injure myself primarily, and/or camera, board, or foil secondarily.

Folks here on the forum are talking about wanting to see more pics, and vids....so here's your chance to possibly get one more out in the water if the price is right, and the attachment contraptions aren't too complicated.  :)
