I am considering of ordering a Sunova Ocean Pro. Is it significantly better than the Allwater Pro in downwinds? We don't have these boards in Spain yet so no possibility to test. For example, is NSP Sonic 2018 (which we have some here) more like Allwater Pro or Ocean? Is Ocean Pro significantly slower in choppy or flatter conditions then Allwater?
tis very confusing and I never tested any of these Sunova race boards. According to their site the Ocean (green) is fastest on the swell and I'm guessing open ocean fun board. The Allwater is for any water conditions and comes in a dugout (blue) or slight recess deck (orange) and I'm guessing these two are a one board quaver. I like the allwater blue dugout board if I buy a sunova. I think the Sonic is an allwater board.
I briefly paddled a Sunova All-water (Blue nose) and a All-around (Orange nose flat deck).
The rocker on the two boards feel different with the All-around more pulled in. It was very noticeable on slide chop, side wind. The All-around definitively would not be my first choice for DW, more like a touring or race board.
I would say that the All-water is more a flat water/choppy water kind of board than a down-winder. I think that the lower rocker could engage the nose more than on other dugouts geared toward DW.
I hope to be able to spend more time on the All-water. BTW like most dugout, you are nice and low on the water which compensate for teh initial tippiness from the first 5 minutes.
Thx for the feedback. The Allround is a nice board mostly suitable for beach races, some surfing even. I had boards like that but since I do not race anymore it is not interesting for me.
Allwater seems to be the right board for Carolina SUP Race type of events. Mix of everything. My initial choice is Ocean model because it is more downwind oriented and that is what I am focusing on doing it. It would be great to hear an opinion from someone who has tried the 2018 Sonic like 14X24 and the Ocean or Allwater board. Since I have tried the Sonic then I can have a good idea.
