Go Foil Bolts
« on: April 09, 2018, 06:50:24 PM »
FedEx is supposedly delivering my Iwa/M200 combo tomorrow sometime before 8pm. So in preparation of getting things mounted, I'm curious the size of the mounting bolts most are using. Several guys on the beach that I talked to, said that they tapped out whatever size the Tuttle holes are (can't find anything on their website) to a 1/4-20, and using 2-1/2" stainless bolts.

Reason I'm asking, is I'm just curious if everyone's tapping to the standard size, or if I can find the correct length metric to fit it if that's the case (guessing M6 x 65mm?). Because that sounds like I'll be needing to find a specialty fastener company if that's the case...or just tapping them out myself, and going with the 1/4-20 like the others.

Thanks in advance.

Yup, it's 6mm. The only reason guys tap to 1/4-20 is Maui. Here it's like crayons and jackknives. Get some M6 x 1.0 stainless torx. The length is determined by your board thickness and the depth of the barrel nut in the Tuttle plug. The GoFoil barrel nut is set deep. Probably 65mm will do, maybe 70. And get some 6mm stainless fender washers too.

Thanks Bill. Think it's gonna be a little bit of a chore to run them down, but would rather not start tapping things out if I don't have to do so. But if it's something I'm gonna have to special order, and wait longer...I may just start running a tap down the holes.  ;) ;D

Fastenall has round head torx 6M X 1.0 in stainless to 60 MM. It's not that easy to find really long stainless 1/4-20. I have tons of 6mm non-stainless, it's the motorcycle screw of choice. I fugure when I get back to Hood River I'll go by Tacoma Screw and see what they have. In reality, a cadmium plated bolt would be fine.

I got a triple set a week or two ago and it came with two sets of tuttle box screws, 50mm and 70mm long.  Do not all kits come with screws?  Or are you looking for something longer that you might not find in 6mm?

I suspect SanO doesn't realize that screws come with them. I'm kind of allergic to Phillips head screws, so my reflex is to replace then at least with Allens and preferably torx, but that's just fastener obsession. For me, wandering into Fastenall or Tacoma Screw is like a woman walking into Nordstroms. Nothing good or cheap is going to happen.

Well that's good great news that they come with them...YAY!!

Since several of the guys were talking about tapping them out, I just figured that didn't come with anything, and because I couldn't find anything on the GF website thought I'd ask here, and start my search early if need be....and glad that I did.

Thanks for all the info, and I'll sleep better tonight...since Fastenal's website was telling me 1-2 days to get them to my local branch once I ordered them. Phew. :o :)

In the water in a day or two with it...yeehaw!!

I ordered a bunch of 80 mm x 6mm Stainless (probably from China), they come 5 to a pack on Amazon.  I would have rather ordered 90 mm long because they barely reach on my L41.  You can always cut them back.

They take about a week to the west coast.  I thought better to order a few $2 bolts than start re-tapping and swapping out barrel nuts.

PS:  I went to the hardware store and used steel 6mm bolts (aka NOT stainless).  But these work for a week or two without a problem to get you through the order cycle time.

For those that cannot wait for delivery check if your local Home Depot has them in stock, not all do.  I picked up 6x1x100 stainless which is the length I needed for my board

Well, I guess everything worked out OK, but cheesus cripes FedEx if freakin' useless, and a frustrating POS.  >:(

Much sanding needed to get Tuttle end to fit into Tuttle box, and the supplied M6x70mm screws were too short, but local hardware store had them in 80mm, and that was just right, so in business, and ready to go....

Now we've got wind, wind, and more wind forecast for the next couple of weeks here, but hopefully there'll be a enough a let up here, and there to get her out on the water. Fingers crossed...

Stainless Steel and Marelube TEF45 anti-seize compound works well for me but I googled and found these: M6 x 80mm titanium bolts:
