This season, I am trying to remember to not to paddle back out too quickly after a ride if the set is still coming in.  The only time I get winded is when I am fighting to get back out, taking set wave after wave.  Better to relax on the inside let the set roll through then make my dash back outside.

I have a very bad habit of not breathing when I'm in a big wave. Really stupid, but I've been unsuccessful in fixing it. In smaller waves, like 1.5 OH, I whistle to remind myself to breathe, but when waves get consequential (at least in my squirrel mind--baby waves to others) I stop breathing. If I get slammed, I start almost out of breath. Makes for some interesting moments, but I don't panic. I do a lot better when I get caught inside and I'm about to get worked.

Just back from Costa Rica, a big swell came through and I had to manage some big hold downs. On a few there was so much white water I had to climb my leash to make it. I was def worried if my leash broke it would have been way tougher to grab breaths between big waves when caught inside. I learned on trick to hold the blade of my paddle and pump to the surface. Next time I bring my waist leash with me on travel.

Waist leash and an impact vest. Even a little float makes a big difference. I made my own waist leash with about 2-3 pounds of float in the belt. Gets me to the surface a little quicker and my mouth is above water in a vertical position, feet down. That's pretty good stuff. I wear it even in baby waves.

You can barely see it here in the picture from the thread on trying the Sunova One.
