So, this may be a little OT, but why do you guys wear those crazy heavy gloves? I haven't SUP'd in cold weather, but I WW kayaked in sub freezing temps for a decade or so and we never bothered with neoprene gloves. If you keep your core warm the hands would pretty much take care of themselves. Even in 0* water and - 2* air temps bare hands and pogies or leather palmed waterski gloves were plenty. And we were dipping out hands every stroke. Not like SUP where you stay in the air 95% of the time.
WHAT??? Are you serious? 0 degree water? -2 degree air? No gloves? No disrespect but I think you are misremembering that part of your life. I'm saying that basically is not possible.

Well, then you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.  You should also work on your reading comprehension. I said, "bare hands and pogies or leather palmed waterski gloves." They have a neoprene back and leather palms for good paddle feel.

Oh I comprehended just fine, I'm just not buying it. And speaking of "...you obviously have no idea what you are talking about" I'll refer you to your statement "I haven't SUP'd in cold weather, but..." and leave it at that. ;)

If you haven't SUP surfed in New England in February below zero weather in a snow storm then you should not even discuss gloves or mittens on this thread, you are way out of touch with our reality.

My dad used to say "No sense, no feeling".

Maybe I'm missing something, but perhaps you can explain the difference between SUPing in cold weather and kayaking? As far as I can tell the only difference is that in kayaking you dip you hands in that freezing water every stroke. And really, I've only SUP'd down to about 5* or so. Not real cold, since below that it's kayak weather.

Wow lot's of big bad tough guys on this thread with no gloves. I also guess your such a bad ass SUP surfer that you never ever end up in the water. Talk is cheap so why not grab your board and gear (minus the gloves) and come surf with me in February in a snow storm, if you can last over an hour straight side by side with me without gloves than you deserve to brag, but again I want to see it to believe it.

Kayak is slightly different as you are constantly moving, while SUP surfing you may occasionally have a lull and be stationary for a few minutes holding a wet cold paddle. Also while Kayaking ona nice flat river how often is your entire body submerged under a wave or two and then your suit gets flushed with a nice blast of freezing cold water? If your talking about Surf Kayak again different story.

I'll be smart and wear my gloves, stay warm, enjoy the surf.

Hmm. Standing up completely exposed to the elements as opposed to sitting down in a goat boat for a start..

I know and respect several winter paddling kayak dudes, and a winter surfing maniac. They dress for surfing in cold salt water. Nuff said.

Coldy, Area10, Eagle, any manly men sans collette in your parts of the world? Hehehe.

In the Essex Race last spring I saw a guy in a lovely racing boat go sideways, flip over, and fill with water. I think he was very miserable as he dressed for success as opposed to what can go wrong will go wrong!

Also witnessed some beautiful young people in kayaks last year who lasted for ten minutes in their river paddling outfits. All had severe hypothermia.

Rant is now OVAH. Please return to your regularly scheduled program.

Johnnysmoke, do the colors help with cold at the Gasket???

The Eskimos would probably have no trouble surfing in New England without gloves. They are a perfect example of how a race of people can adapt to the cold over time.

Some people can handle incredibly cold temperatures without gloves and some can't. It may come from their genetic history. Having a distant ancestry from northern Europe may have an advantage over someone whose ancestors were from warmer climes.

Others have physical problems that cause them to get cold sooner.

It has nothing to do with intelligence. Either you get cold or you don't. Everyone will succumb to hypothermia at some point. Some a lot quicker than others.

Just wondering if Sunova have decided to keep on using the liftsup handle for the foreseeable future?

Yes. They are really well loved in many warm climates.
I really like mine when board handling (carrying, throwing on the roof racks)..... it's only the thick winter gloves that become an issue sometimes.
