I love when it looks like that, everybody thinks it packed. I surfed early at an undisclosed location very near a huge crowd with just a handful of us out.

Think swell direction and tide and you can figure out where.

That's about the average summer crowd at Blackies in Newport.

It's Cowells in Santa Cruz this AM, sorry for not IDing it.

I went out in the later PM about 3:20PM to my usual Sharks area, and it was not crowded at all.  Really gusty wind, lots of chop, I thought it would be a short session.  After 45 minutes, the wind went away, it became glassy and beautiful with nice waves albeit really walling and closed out, you had to pick the right spot and stay ahead of the whitewater.  There were occasional DOH coming in at The Hook, it was banging at times.

I don't think there is any secrecy to that spot. If it's where I think it is it's pretty much in town with a well travelled road that runs along the cliff above it. So it's about as secret as Santa Cruz itself. My wife and I sat on a bench above it and enjoyed our coffee when we were up there.

I'm heading to an infamous spot that rhymes with Shlackies in 30 minutes to push my 10 year old daughter into waves. Now if you want to talk crowds......

Ha, ha!  Yes, the most crowded spot I know of here in OC.  Others come close, but nowhere packs in as many people as Rubber Duckies, oops, I mean Blackies.   #2 spot for summer crowds has to be DoHo.  Both have very convenient parking and easy waves, so they pack them in.

Doheny is so weird with crowds.  Some days you'd think there would be a battle for every wave and it just doesn't materialize.  Other days, you'd think you'd have the place to yourself and it's like a summer day at Disneyland.  I honestly don't understand why the kids paddle camp (which mucks up the selection on weekend mornings) doesn't move down the coast and launch from uncrowded Capo Beach (Shorter walk, less surfers to bother)?  Ah well, it's summer, I guess I'll enjoy the warm water and relax with a few hundred of my closest friends.

If only Warren Miller was to do a contemporary surf flick, Doheny would provide some good fodder as would any place we surf.

I'll leave you with this: “The best place in the word to ski surf is where you’re skiing surfing that day.” - Warren Miller (with some help).
