Blue Planet 10-6 ...Excellent!
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:15:07 AM »
This is the 'Multi Tasker' (M-T) a 10-6 x 34 x 170 liters from Blue Planet's 'Wide Surf' series.  At 5-10 x 185 (84kg) with a set of physical issues that affect the mobility of my left leg, I needed a platform rather than some lip slasher.  I was simply spending too much time climbing back aboard to have much fun in our local shorebreak.

I looked pretty hard at Robert's shapes.  I needed nose kick to help save me in our short period waves.  The 'Easy' model was very attractive as were a couple of others. Blue Planet makes it fairly easy with a graph that shows the characteristics of each model to compare with another. (I am 4,019mi from a demo.)  Ultimately, the plan shape and the added width and the fact the M-T had the lowest volume sold me.  I have had it with 'corky' boards - nada mas.

I like its 'surfy' outline.

I may need to add more forward traction.   The trend to adding strength to the rails is good.  Robert uses Kevlar.

Did I mention nose kick?   It would be nice to have some of those slow, slopey waves you see in OZ, but that's not happening here.

The car approves.

I have only had one two hour test session.  A few things come to memory...   I love how bright white and shiny the foredeck is in the ocean; it's somehow very cheerful. (overall I love the coloring)  .. the deck pad has nice cushion compared to some stiffer and thinner ones I have stood on. .. it's nice to paddle a longer board again - it actually moves .. it has 27" of flat deck for those who 'fear the dome' .. even rolling in the wind swell, it was quite stable without feeling like an immovable object.  .. there were no real waves, I was the only one out.

I should mention:  free shipping to a Delta freight terminal (BWI for me) and a well constructed, padded board bag is included.

My squawks are few .. even tho' there are five fin boxes, the included fins are not up to the quality of the board. Unfortunatly for me, the only Future fins I have are some 4.5 Rusty Quads.  That bigass Becker fin you see on the car was pulling the tail of the board all over the place in the current out there; that's headed back to the closet.  There are three places where the size is shown; I prefer the simple tradition of marking the stringer rather than the windsurf companies that BILLBOARD the tails of their boards.  I'd prefer the deck pad extend a little farther north; it's too close to the handle for me.  Robert's handle is a big improvement over the lift-up style. Fiddling to lift the handle while another wave is bearing down on me feels like it takes too long, even tho' just seconds.  Yet, I think I am still a fan of the deep ledge.  Since this 'bar' handle is technically the same (with the ability of adding a cable lock) I think it simply a matter of getting used to it.  More later.

Jim

Thanks to Creek for the idea of how to photograph a board.

Nice intro and photos...

Nice also to see some focus on the Blue Planet boards. There are some gems in there. I do agree that if you buy a carbon version they could upgrade the plastic or vinyl fins. I bought some upgrade fins from them, and at a good price.

In any event, congrats on the cool board. I'm sure you'll get the low stress wave time on top of the board you're looking for. Update on how it surfs : )

That is a fine looking board. Congrats at getting your new board. Love that black and red colored camo deckpad. Very well color coordinated with the rest of the board. Great grip for the board too. Nice little marsh area you've got in your last photo for you to get acclimated to your new board.

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments as well as taking the time and effort required to post all of your photos.

That's the model I rented from Blue Planet when I stayed in Waikiki.

Great board and lots of fun.

I learned to surf on a similar size and shape board. I still have a soft spot in my heart for that plan shape and rocker. And yeah, great looking board too.

Well done Robert.

Sweet Wetstuff! Nice to comfortably stand in the line up, even with some chop. I just lightly sprayed some anti-slip clear paint on the 'North' end of my board  ;D
You can hardly see it. I masked off a line almost like it's a continuation of the deck pad. It adds just enough grip that I can put a foot forward when I'm paddling in to a wave.

I use monster paint but I'm pretty sure the krylon is the same. Love that stuff.

Beautiful board......i think I'd love it. Looks a lot like my Foote and almost identical specs.....it surfs a little shorter for me though with another 90 lbs on board.... ;)

Thanks, guys...  I really like this board.  I had a conversation yesterday about how one designer was considering doing different sizes of a given model in volume increments rather than headlining 'length'. I'm not smart enough to know if the board would get too weak, but my head says; "Gimme width and length but cut back on the volume. (like Robert did with this board) I thought the concave deck on the Naish Nalu was a nifty way to lower your C/G  ..and Bert Berger's Schroom too.

I solved that 'rudder' problem; it was the oddest thing, when simply standing stationary, the board would 'weathercock' with the current? I pulled the 10" Becker and found an old set of Rusty 4.65 quads left over from a directional kiteboard, vintage ~2003.  I have no idea how they will do in the surf.  It was only beach lappers today at mid tide, so I just ocean paddled for a couple of miles but they worked fine without any yaw.

I covered the single slot with some 3M stone tape and put my name/number on it  ...for the day I'm found face down.

TD/Cowboy...  I'll look into that spray.   I have some Re-Dek left over, again from kite days, but that's pure 'dermabrasion'.  Fall on it and you are guaranteed to have new pink skin growing soon.  Cheers.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your business and for the great review and I agree that a lower volume board can be more stable as it keeps the center of gravity lower.
Those quads you have look good for the board and should work well in the surf, big quad fins are great for bigger boards.

Regarding the cheap plastic fins we include, I agree that they don't do the boards justice.  We have thought about including upgraded fins but many customers already own fin sets they like or want to use different fins from what we would include, so instead of including nice fins and raising the price, we just include a cheap set and let the customer choose the fins they want to upgrade to.

The Krylon is less abrasive than monster paint. I had a race board that someone sprayed monster deck on. On the shore starts, I'd run and jump on your board. Every time I did it my knee caps and the tops of my toes would just get hamburger'd from being quickly dragged across the board getting from my hands to my feet.  On my SUS boards I used a very light mist of the Krylon on the front deck areas that don't have deck pad. It hardly changes the look of the board and gives you just enough grip to not slip off.

TD you just saved me. I'm about to spray over the nose of my new mid length that my wife is painting up. That'll be way better than MP or wax on that. Thx man!

First (real) session update. This board is a confidence builder. It was helped by this being the first time that the secondary swell was not larger than the primary. (the usual is 2-3 swells)  The other part that was really welcome is that the board turns from the middle. I was able to fairly qickly change direction without having to get to the stomp pad.  The Quads seemed fine also, no frozen rudder feeling or skidding.

One other little trick: when on top of the car (black car) you cannot see then handle to grab it; it's too dark under there. Plus, the pad is also dark.  I put a small wrap of blue Velcro around the grip and it provides just enough contrast to easily see where to grab.
