What do you take with you?
« on: March 22, 2013, 11:34:39 AM »
New to SUP, been out a few times 5-7 miles with Mr. SUPinSC.  Going to start heading out solo in the mornings on a lake channel in a quiet area....no houses few boats and a solid hike to a road.  Aiming for 5 miles to start and growing to 9 or so, out and back.

What do you carry with you when you go SUP flatwater solo?  And how?  I plan on water, a cell phone in a zip lock, whistle in a dry bag on EZ deck rigging system.....what do you take?  Kind of curious what others do.

Thanks
~A

I always wear a PFD, be it my Astral or my inflatable.  Both have a whistle.  I also wear a leash just because I feel more comfortable knowing that I'm attached the the board.  Of course a cell phone, keys, energy bar or gels, water, some form of ID.  I might also take a dry bag with extra shirt, sunscreen, headlamp, gps depending on where what time of day.

Thanks!  I had not thought about ID.  I'll toss in a headlamp for evening paddles--thanks for the idea!

Do you have a deck rigging system for your dry bag?

Yep, I have a SUPThings suction cup net.  I've no problems even in some mild rapids.  Because it's a suction cut, you need to have a clean cup and board when you install it.  If you get sand between the cup and board, it won't stick.  I really like this system because you don't have to glue anything to your board.  You can also install it in the rear or on another board.

When I really want to nerd-out, I will pack my camp stove and supplies and take my VHF radio.  I don't get a cell signal in my favorite spot so it's nice to have plus I can listen to the weather reports and whatnot.

love SUPthings suction net.  Thanks for the tip--I'd only found systems that require glue and had been hesitant to attach mine.

Camping stove and VHF, that's a whole new level....hmmm...I wonder if I could find my old camp stove......

A little backpacking stove is great!  It's so nice to have some hot water for coffee or a freeze dried meal.  It can really lift your spirits and give you a boost.  Who wants to be freezing cold eating a frozen ham and cheese sandwich?  Not me!

A zip lock bag will probably leak.  I recommend a "water proof" case, that allows phone use while still in the case.
X-1 Audio is one brand to check out.

Leash... always
I wear a fannie pack... swapped around to the front for easy access.
Phone in a commercially available waterproof pouch, that allows you to use it as hbsteve said.
Point & Shoot Waterproof Camera!!!!!!!! tons of cool stuff to capture on film.
I keep it zipped in the front pouch, with the wrist strap hanging out.
I put the wrist strap on BEFORE I unzip the pouch to get the camera out. Waterproof doesn't help if it drops in murky or deep water.
Sunblock lip balm
I wear a baseball hat as a sun visor... sunglasses if needed.
1 bottle of water for a 3hr paddle

I always scan the posts to see what my neighbor Rick has to say.

Last summer, some flat water commutes to a surf spot were made pleasant by using 2 Nalgene bottles. 1 for water and 1 for a cell phone and a couple energy bars.  Add in sun tan, a cheap hat; all contained in a cheap backback.  A great way to beat the gridlock.

Here is a cool little stove that I pack around and works great. So impressed I got one for all my kids.

Just depends on plans for the day/outing for what I will pack.
Always a leash, inflateable belt pfd with whistle, (I have gone home when realizing I forgot pfd and leash. I may go without one but not both. Always an extra leash in the car now) Water or gatorade, most always a phone, (tons of good waterproof case options out there) and from there it can be tons to not much else. Most days it looks like I am on safari with my box up front, fishing stuff, and little cooler. Sometimes a milkcrate with a dry bag filled with cold weather layers in late season that I can sit on too if on the water for the day.

Both of these items can be purchased at dicks sporting goods:

I'll put my phone in this, clip it to my beltloop, and put it in my pocket.
