How ironic that my previous topic was on the technique of 'kicking the board', and next thing is I break my leg. I was standing on the board and lost my balance to the left. I was hoping to land as close to the board as possible (I was in the eddy and didn't want to fall into the main current). And so I left my right foot on the board whilst my body fell into the void just left of the board. The ankle twisted and the full force of the body weight falling made the calf bone go snap before I even hit the water.

I think the lesson learned is that if you know you're falling off the board and one foot is still on it, you might as well surrender and really fall away from the board (instead of straight down), or at least get the weight off the foot that is still on the board...

Did you ever break anything during stand up paddling?

Oh No! I hate to hear this. Hope the recovery is going well. I've seen sprained ankles and beat up shins...but NEVER a broken bone! I fall more than I should because of those big plastic boards..i just wanted to be away from it..once the fall started. get well quick bro

Hate to hear this hope your making a speedy recovery. Was it a composite board? I have been hit hard by my board on the river but luckily it has been a an inflatable every time. Another reason that inflatables are best for the river. Let us know how it goes?

Brutal!

That's way worse than the fact that i put my knee cap through the rail of my brand new board during it's first session. :(

Dan: a bit late, I know... No, it was a 6" inflatable. My body was falling straight down whilst my foot was still on the center of the board. If I had kept tension on all ankle muscles, nothing would have happened. But I had been struggling to keep my balance, and when I finally lost it, I relaxed all muscles in total surrender. So it was my weight against to huge floatation of a 6" board, with my relaxed ankle in the middle... Anyway, all back to normal since april.
