Waterfall: Finland, Lappland, Oulanka Nationalpark, Kuusamo, Jyrävä

What's it like

at high water level

An 8-9 meters high fall of the slide type cataract, in 2 steps. A tip: It is a straight forward drop, just try to stay upright. After the first part of the slide (once you´ve passed the whirlie on the right side, paddle hard, lean forward and aim the bow slightly to the right. Do this because the left wall is slanting towards center underwater. Think deep thoughts on your way down. It has a kick from right to left, so you will surface after a few meters, close to the left canyon wall.

Dangers: Ugly swirling cauldron in the middle (right).

Runnable lines: the main jet of water in the center.

Surrounding WW: The rapid before the falls (Aallokkokoski) is grade 3-4: easy lines, but swimming here is not advisable.

The water temperature is 10-20 degrees centigrade in June-October, but it is runnable any time of the year.

How to get there

Helsinki-Lahti-Mikkeli-Kuopio-Iisalmi-> Kajaani-Suomussalmi-Kuusamo (9-10 hours with rest stops).

Parking: In the campground, where the oulankariver starts.

Go to the lake and paddle towards a hanging footbridge, that's where the river starts.
